ABI Electronics Ltd

History

ABI Electronics Ltd is the world’s leading supplier of specialist electronic test and measurement equipment, and a renowned contract electronics manufacturer. All ABI products are designed and manufactured at its premises in Yorkshire, UK and have been exported all over the globe for over 35 years.

ABI was founded in 1983, with the initial concept of the business coming from a simple, everyday incident. ABI’s founder accidentally stepped on an electronics IC which had fallen to the floor and questioned to himself; “I wonder if it still works?”. In the wake of this fundamental question, ABI produced the ICT-24; the world's first low-cost digital IC tester. This product proved to be wildly popular, leading to the rapid expansion of the fledgling business – and the rest is history!

Moving from a small factory unit in 1985, ABI underwent multiple expansions in its earlier years until its latest move in 1998 to the present headquarters in Barnsley, South Yorkshire. Despite only having one manufacturing site worldwide, ABI has conquered the test and measurement market on 6 continents. Our long-standing exporting success is due to an active distribution network throughout Europe, Africa, the Americas, Asia and Australia – with some distributor relationships spanning well over 20 years.

ABI brought to the international market the BoardMaster; an advanced diagnostic solution at an affordable price for both large companies and small organizations, which provided a previously unseen level of fault diagnosis capabilities. Today, the BoardMaster is a highly popular fault diagnostic and repair solution amongst blue chip companies like Samsung, Nasa, Alstom, Lego, Lockheed Martin and many others, as well as independent industrial repair organisations that provide an invaluable service to key industries internationally by keeping critical assets going and reducing E-waste.

As technology advances, so does ABI. To offer solutions that respond accurately to our customer’s needs, our teams at head office create new products to respond to new and increasingly challenging demands. For instance, in reaction to the introduction of BGA devices on the market, ABI released the JTAGMaster – as with the introduction of new technology, there is a need for a way to test it. Another example is the increasing problem of counterfeit components - especially with the familiar problem of the chip shortage, caused and magnified by the 2020 global pandemic - causing a myriad of issues for electronic suppliers and manufacturers alike. ABI released acclaimed SENTRY Counterfeit IC Detector to combat the rising counterfeit issue, which was awarded a Global Technology award. ABI constantly works on renovating, improving, and updating all pieces of software, based on customer requirements; multiple new updates are released every year at no cost for ABI users.

In addition to the test and measurement side of the business, ABI also supplies custom PCB’s to local customers in the UK and Ireland. With manufacturing capabilities suitable for prototypes and small to medium PCB batches, ABI has maintained a strong reputation for the complete range of services offered to cover all aspects of contract electronics manufacturing. Our contract PCB customers vary massively in size and sector; from laser manufacturing to radar systems.

ABI are also the creators of the 'Repair, Don't Waste' movement, which started as a hashtag in 2015. With the recent explosion of pressure on businesses and individuals alike to reduce emissions, the flagship website RepairDontWaste.com was launched in February 2022. The movements aim is to highlight the importance of implementing a repair-first approach in every industrial business and educate those in the industry who may not be engineers themselves but are looking for a solution to their faulty PCB troubles. The crucial website collates insightful information about PCB repair, alongside cases studies and evidence of vast successes and ‘Repair Heroes’ who have made the transition to repair rather than replace. Multiple international organisations around the world like Collins Aerospace or Schindler have embraced the movement and have contributed to the reduction of E-Waste that is generated every year.

ABI has almost 40 years’ experience in developing testing and fault-finding equipment of the highest quality and are backed by a global reputation of excellent quality and long-standing, exceptional service to all our customers. ABI is certified in accordance with ISO 9001-2018, and we pride ourselves in our ongoing commitment to quality, professional fulfilment of duties and constant expansion and development.

PRODUCTS

ABI Electronics offers a comprehensive range of products for all your repair and testing needs. Our undoubtably most renowned product is the BoardMaster- a highly versatile, self-contained, and easy-to-use test system. Offering an extensive set of test instruments that can be used on a vast range of PCBs, users can generate test sequences with the BoardMaster to allow for quick and efficient fault-finding.

Other ABI products have been designed to cover different needs in electronics engineering, other than testing and repair. The RevEng schematic learning system is designed to generate professional schematics from a PCB, extremely useful for users who may not have a schematic for the PCB they are working with and to reverse engineer PCBs which have become obsolete. Due to increasing issues in supply chain, we have seen a rise in the introduction of counterfeit components; for this predicament, ABI offers the award-winning SENTRY counterfeit IC detector. The popular JTAGMaster is ABI’s solution for the testing, fault-finding and programming of complex PCB assemblies with JTAG devices, including QFPs and BGAs.
