MARCH 2019

ABI Electronics-Northern Powerhouse Export Champion 2019

Durham Castle in Durham

British companies with a track record in exporting goods and services globally received much-deserved recognition from the UK government in Durham last week. Barnsley based technology manufacturer ABI Electronics was one of the companies praised by their contribution to the economic growth of the North of England.

The scenic Durham Castle was the venue selected for announcing the 2019 Northern Powerhouse Export Champions on February 28th. The event, organised by the UK government's Department for International Trade (DIT), was hosted by the Secretary of State for International Trade, Dr. Liam Fox and Minister of State at the DIT, Baroness Fairhead CBE.

Speaking to representatives from this year's Export Champions community, Mr. Fox said that "the UK exports jumped 10.9% in 2017, adding a further £60Billion to the GDP. This in turn provided the treasury with approximately 15 to 20 billion pounds to finance public investment. This proves that exporters raise the country's income and help secure a wealthy future for the UK."

The Northern Powerhouse is an official government programme aimed at raising the profile of the world-class manufacturing sector established across the north of the UK. The Export Champions community represent a wide range of sectors who will be generously giving their time to mentor, motivate and assist other businesses on their export journeys, leading by example as they continue to win new international business and reach out to new markets themselves.

ABI Electronics is based in Barnsley, South Yorkshire, where it designs and manufactures specialist equipment for the maintenance, test and repair of industrial electronics. ABI started trading in 1983 and has been an active exporter for over 30 years. To date, ABI products have been exported to over 120 countries across the world. Typical markets served by ABI include defence, rail transport, oil and gas, energy, aerospace, manufacturing and industrial repair.

Writing to ABI’s sales manager Willian Santos, the head of the DIT for Yorkshire and Humber Mark Robson said “Export Champions are companies that have successfully sold overseas and are prepared to encourage others to consider growing their international business through exporting. To recognise the contribution that ABI Electronics has made to the economic growth of the region by exporting, we would be pleased if you would like to join the programme. Thank you for your continuing contribution in growing the international business of the Northern Powerhouse.”

ABI's managing director, Shaun Hayes (on the right), said "This was a fantastic night for the UK business community and yet another milestone for ABI Electronics. I am pleased to see our company recognised for its long history as a global exporter and for its contribution to the UK economy."
